Is it possible to land your dream job straight out of college? Well, WayUp CEO Liz Wessel certainly did, snagging a role at Google (even after telling the recruiter that she planned to quit in two years to pursue her own startup). "I honestly had my dream job out of college," Wessel said in a recent Facebook Live interview with Business Insider. "I was very lucky to work at Google. I had friends who didn't work at Google and had their dream job out of college." If you can't find that perfect fit right away, don't sweat it, she said. Treat your first post-grad gig like a learning experience. "If for some reason you wanted to go into marketing but you only got that sales role, but there's a marketing team at your company, why not learn as much as you can on the weekend or at night, not during nine to five?" Wessel said. "Then talk to your manager about potentially doing a 10% project during your free time with that other team. I'd be surprised if they said no." She said that it's probably best to wait a few months before you put in your request. All in all, though, this is a great way of gaining valuable experience and setting yourself on the path to eventually getting your dream job. "If you're offering to do it on your own free time and it's not going to take away from your core job, then they're probably going to let you," Wessel said. "Then that's a good way to see if that role is even right for you."
