Mobile devices and the apps that run on them are finding traction in the workplace. Companies and employees seeking to increase productivity are leveraging apps and devices to enable employees to continue working outside of a traditional workspace and improve workflow for various roles in numerous industries. This trend has driven mobile workers, or employees who use mobile devices for their work, to account for 65% of the US workforce in 2016.

While enterprise mobility offers employers and their employees a slew of, some businesses have been slow to officially launch their own software or device mobility programs, which has resulted in the emergence of numerous employee-led initiatives. Bring Your Own Device and Bring Your Own Apps are two scenarios in which employees choose what devices or software they employ for enterprise mobility. Most companies that employ Bring Your Own policies lack policies to regulate usage of enterprise mobility tools.

In a new report from BI Intelligence we look at the state of the Bring Your Own environment and company-led initiatives. We identify the driving factors of each, and explore the impact of their adoption. We address barriers to enterprise mobility adoption such as security concerns and budgeting. We then look at how the enterprise mobility market is poised to change over the next five years.

Among the big picture insights you'll get from this report, titled The Enterprise Apps Report: 'Bring Your Own' Policies, the Shift to Enterprise Apps, and How Companies are Adapting to Meet Employees' Mobile Needs:

  • Enterprise mobility has important implications for enterprise productivity. Sixty-nine percent of managers said that mobility will change the enterprise over the next 10 years as much as the web did in the last 20, according to a Cisco survey.
  • Bring Your Own (BYO) is becoming businesses' default policy governing employees' use of their own devices for work purposes. By allowing employees to BYO, they have more freedom to use devices and apps they prefer without worrying about their employer exercising complete control over their device.
  • As employees use their own devices for work purposes in greater numbers, they are increasingly looking for apps to meet their productivity needs. There are two main types of enterprise apps — third-party business and productivity mobile apps and company-sanctioned mobile apps, which can be bought, built, or maintained by an enterprise.
  • Third-party productivity apps are popular for work purposes, in large part because it's still too expensive and resource intensive for companies to build their own apps. Business and productivity apps regularly account for around 13% of apps available in the App Store. They also generate the highest average revenue per download of all major app categories except for games.
  • Company-sanctioned enterprise apps will eat into productivity apps' share of the enterprise mobility market. 37% of companies had already created their own mobile enterprise app or had commissioned the creation of one by a third party, according to Cisco's survey.
