Microsoft Turns Page on Open Technologies, Inc. but Hypes Open Source Support for WebRTC - WebRTC World

Jean Paoli, President, Microsoft Open Technologies created more than a bit of buzz this week with a blog announcing what he called, Open source at Microsoft: The next chapter for Microsoft Open Technologies.
WebRTC may still be in its formative stages in some respects but that does not mean that those at the leading edge of WebRTC developments are not targets of opportunity for aggressive companies in the real-time communications space. As new case that illustrated this is the announcement that Atlassian, provider of developer and collaboration tools that include JIRA, Confluence and HipChat, has acquired WebRTC-based video conferencing service BlueJimp.
Productivity in the workplace is a key concern for businesses because any time on their clock not spent working toward the end goal is negative for overall success. Numerous solutions and offerings tout being able to streamline and enhance workflows so more work is getting done. But a recent survey is showing that a productivity drain is still happening across workplaces.
WebRTC offers great promise to the customer support industry. The standard, which allows for real-time browser-to-browser voice and video communications without the need to download any plug-ins or software, could help revolutionize how companies offer multimedia support to customers using browsers (either desktop or mobile) to look for information or resolve issues.
GENBAND has often been known for its ability to work with other devices and even some software platforms; only recently, GENBAND's fring system was seen working with the Dodo Phone Anywhere services from Australia's M2 Group. Now, GENBAND Smart Office is having a turn, getting together with NextPlane's unified communications (UC) federation known as UC Exchange, a cloud-based community of users ready to take advantage of a host of collaborative tools to get whatever job that needs be done addressed.
