I Wish I Had a Cookie for Every Time I Need 'State'

I have had two hard drive failures on my computers (and yes, one was from Apple). The end result of both was a hard drive replacement, and guess what? Those cloud / apps / services were no help; Zilch, Nada, Nothing.


I had to call customer service and have them try to second-guess me every step of the way. What a mess. Getting the services back in operation should not be that hard. So why is it?


I think the reason is that the cloud and the Web have lost sight of the value that a cookie can have. You see, cookies can keep “state.”

When soft-switches were first being virtualized, rather than making “line cards” in software, a cookie solved a lot of the problems of authentication, feature access, etc. Read More
