One more remnant of youth has gone by the wayside in the form of the good old neighborhood meter reader. Years ago they’d knock on your door to tell you they were there, and ask if the dog was in. Then, they would jimmy your fence open, unless you were nice enough to walk around and open it for them. Sometime in the last decade, utilities switched to remote readers, in which case the meter reader only had to be within a few feet. Ours never did seem to work, and I’d always get a note on the door that “charges would be estimated.”
The next wave has hit in the form of smart meters, which automatically replay readings back to the utility company. Given our highly connected world, and the ease of cellular and wireless connections, it’s actually surprising it’s taken this long for the transition to happen. Read More
