Featured Articles With billions of dollars located overseas, Google has decided that the time to invest in European startups has arrived. On July 9, Google announced through their official blog they will be opening a new branch of their startup investment firm Google Ventures in Europe. Microtransactions are a field that's still somewhat new, but giving a lot of app makers a whole new hope in terms of taking an app from nothing to profitable. A new breed of game, the free-to-play game, has sprung up around the concept that, if the game exists, people will pay in order to have better access to certain parts of the game once it's been played for some time at no charge. But a new report from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) suggests this particular field may have gone too far for online retailer Amazon. Neonode Inc. is a leading developer of unique touch-input technologies, notable for producing high performance touch and proximity solution at competitive prices. One of the company's most recent developments is a set of light-based touch controls designed for the steering wheel and dashboard of an automobile. This product has recently been approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for patent number #8,755,023 which ensures that this ground-breaking technology will remain fully under Neonode's control. In April of 2011, electronics juggernaut Sony suffered a data breach so biblical that 77 million user accounts were compromised, one of the most massive scale internet thefts of all time. Pan to fall 2013, 40 million credit and debit card accounts pilfered thanks to Target and their clearly ill-managed data silos. It may surprise many of our readers, but here in the U.S. the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NITIA) are not the only agencies with a vital interest in trends impacting the availability of universal communications. In fact, in many ways, possibly the source of the most current information when it comes to gauging the trend of people going from wireline telecom service to wireless is actually the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (aka, the CDC), who views basic voice connectivity as a national health issue worth tracking. IBM is directing itself toward chip technology, a direction that IBM is prepared to back up with hefty investment, fully $3 billion going into chip technology research and development programs. Elections are a hallmark of a free society, with people getting the ability to choose their leadership. But elections these days still possess some issues that keep people from taking part; physically going to a polling place, waiting in lines of interminable scope, and then filling out a paper ballot by hand, for example. Companies like Scytl are working to bring the process of elections online, a concept that has been eagerly sought since there was an online. These days, when we look for technological advancement, many times we look in Google's direction. We do so not without good reason; consider the sheer number of advancements that Google has made or is making daily from the self-driving car to Project Loon. A recent interview between Google's co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, meanwhile, suggested that the next big advance in the field was likely to come from artificial intelligence. What Page and Brin had to say about such a development, meanwhile, was eye-opening to say the least. Streaming video and ISPs are inextricably linked when it comes to bandwidth consumption, with online video driving consumers to higher tiers of Internet service to accommodate their habits. That said, ISPs are notoriously persnickety when it comes to peering for video, claiming that their costs and infrastructure improvement requirements to handle the video onslaught far outweigh any subscriber boon.
