Featured Articles In a rare case of comity and agreement, a number of prominent technology companies have issued an open letter - or challenge, if you will - to the Federal Communications Commission, calling on the governing body to keep the Internet open and free. There is little doubt that thanks to all of the headlines, securing privacy of voice communications over mobile networks has become a priority. In fact, studies have shown that average consumers take the privacy of all their communications, particularly voice, very seriously. And, while businesses are employing encryption technologies to protect themselves from snooping, the mass market represents a market with huge potential. The term "staycation" got its start in 2007, by some reports, as a bout of economic weakness swept the world from which many say we have yet to actually emerge. In a staycation, people stay at home, or only make trips of sufficiently short range that people can return home at night and sleep there. Admittedly, there are those who feel cheated by the concept of a staycation, but others are beginning to embrace it, and are bringing in fresh technology to augment a day off spent at home. Indeed, according to a new study released from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), technology at home is a bigger part of the picture than ever. The move to 3D in the home has failed. Manufactures are cutting back on 3D sets, Vizio plans to stop building them all together this year. 4K, also known as Ultra HD, is now the next big thing, promising benefits that won't need expensive glasses or hokey special effects to be interesting. However there is virtually no 4K content to watch at the moment-broadcast, streamed, or on disk. The industry seems less ready for 4K than it was for 3D, which did have content much earlier. But this is because the industry was burned by 3D and the content they hoped would emerge and drive people to the segment never emerged. Granted, I doubted it would ever succeed because no one likes to wear the glasses. Amazon still remains number one in online sales. That is hardly a surprise, given the wide range of retail offerings the company offers. But guess who has taken second place? It is none other than Apple.
