If you listened to the press reports about President Obama rejecting the Keystone XL Pipeline, you can imagine a nightmare like the Deep Horizon Oil spill that happened in 2010. Thinking that railroads are safe is disproven by the recent accidents that have show that when rail accidents occur, the volume of oil spilled is much greater. According to Diana Furchtgott-Roth of the Manhattan Institute, pipelines are safest form of transport for oil and gas. One reason for their safety is that pipelines have great ability to capitalize on M2M sensor information and use it in a timely manner.
The reality is that on the ground we cover 500,000 miles of pipelines in the continental US already. However, this is not to say that pipelines can’t be upgraded and improved.
