For some time I have been making the case that platforms have evolved from specific market opportunities into generic opportunities, a trend that is identifiable for many of the solutions now in the marketplace. There are exceptions to the rule, however, and more importantly there may actually be a larger concept at work here.
Let me offer an example.
MobileStar has selected Accumulus Corporation as its provisioning platform, meaning that the company is using Accumulus to handle the whole Megillah (side note: Happy Purim…er, Pesach) of automating “online customer payment, billing and fulfillment of its subscription-based services.”
OK, we have provisioning platform in Accumulus…so what exactly is the MobileStar platform doing?
“MobileStar’s solutions provide a tool that, through an Internet-enabled device, enables their customers to gain access to machine telemetry data and two-way control functionality from anywhere in the world. This remote, Web-based diagnostic and monitoring tool helps customers control costs associated with monitoring remote assets such as heavy industrial equipment and vehicles.
It is not always feasible or possible for the people who are responsible for monitoring, tracking and diagnosing equipment problems to be on location with the equipment. MobileStar’s solutions provide an online, subscription-based system that helps its customers keep an eye on what’s going on remotely. With Accumulus providing automated subscription management of MobileStar’s recurring subscription commerce, MobileStar can focus on its core business of providing telematics consulting and M2M solutions.”
