M2M Identity: Seriously, Machine Identities


Companies, speakers and ‘handlers’ have sent in their speaking proposals for M2M Evolution in Miami January 29-31. The call for papers is always interesting as the pieces submitted reveal trends and the issues that we face, and most of the time the proposals converge on similar themes. This time around, I found a convergence on security that forked in an unexpected manner. 

To be clear, security is one of those topics on which you could run an entire weeklong conference and still not cover all seven layers. In fact, should you ever meet someone with CSSP certification you should take a step back in awe, because what that means is that he or she have shown competence in layers one through seven of the security stack, and it takes both a willing heart and a keen mind to achieve proficiency spanning the issues of physical locks and keys to logical software and hacks.

Now normally I think of people as having identities and machines as having MAC addresses. The proposals put forth for M2M Evolution, however, offer some interesting perspectives and how to think about machine-to-machine communication.
