March 21, 2020 Amazon is looking to bring Target and Walmart into an open source technology group. Amazon formed an open source organization called Dent last year, and is now looking to bring Target and Walmart into the fold. Dent has access to some of the technologies that enable Amazon to operate its Go stores, and its open source nature means that firms that download Amazon's software can use it as they like without collaborating directly with Amazon. Amazon likely has several motivations for wanting to work alongside retail rivals on in-store technology including: expanding its brick-and-mortar reach, making its solutions more affordable, and better training its tech so that it can scale more quickly in the future.
