Fully understand the race to 5G in the US with this chart.
| Chart: Apps & Platforms | | Everything you need to know about the race to 5G… When the 3GPP officially ratified the 5G NSA (nonstand-alone) New Radio (NR) standards in December 2017, the race to 5G picked up. The new standards, which are a prerequisite for 5G network development, were finalized earlier than anticipated, meaning that the first 5G rollouts could come to market this year, ahead of the industry's initial expectations. And fully capable commercial 5G networks are expected to proliferate through 2019 and 2020.

| Here are some other key points from the study: - 5G is exciting not just because it's the next generation in mobile networking, but also because it'll enable a host of emerging technologies to move into the mainstream. These technologies require faster speeds and lower latency to function, and the capabilities offered by 4G LTE are often insufficient to adequately power them.
- Although the race to 5G is a global battle, the US is playing a key role in its development because it wants to lead the space. US carriers, hardware providers, and, to a certain extent, the government, are pushing 5G development at a frenetic pace. The US is expected to be among the first mobile markets to see widespread 5G availability, with an adoption rate faster than any other region. The GSMA expects 49% of all mobile subscriptions in the US to be on 5G by 2025, whereas that share drops to 14% globally.
- T-Mobile and Sprint are poised to lead 5G network development as a combined entity. Separately, the telecoms lack the resources necessary to make waves in the space, but a merger means they can leverage wider spectrum holdings and infrastructure to lead 5G development in the US and globally. The combined 5G network can tap Sprint's 2.5 GHz holdings, as well as T-Mobile's spectrum at 600 MHz, to create the highest-capacity mobile network in the US to date. The new company, which will operate under the T-Mobile name, also plans to invest up to $40 billion in building out its 5G network and business in the first three years, which is 46% more than the duo has spent collectively over the past three years.
- Although carriers are moving ahead with 5G development, there are a few significant hurdles that will have to be overcome before wide commercial mobile 5G networks become a reality. The three biggest obstacles include spectrum (the US ranked sixth in a recent analysis by the CTIA and Recon Analytics), government approvals (the approval from government regulator to deploy 5G cells can take months, even though deploying a cell itself is a quick process), and the wait for the rollout of 5G compatible smartphones (Samsung, Sony, LG, and HTC's 5G-capable smartphones will release throughout 2019).
