Why Home Ownership Is at an All-Time Low

The home ownership rate in the U.S. has hit a historic low thanks in large part to a significant drop in ownership among younger people.

"The home ownership rate—the percentage of households that own rather than rent the homes that they live in—has fallen sharply since mid-2005," according to Liberty Street Economics. "In fact, in the second quarter of 2016 the home ownership rate fell to 62.9%, its lowest level since 1965."

Part of this decline stems from demographics, as the 45-and-older population has swelled and has become more likely to own a home.
