Featured Articles President Obama, in a commentary piece in the Wall Street Journal, has laid out what is described as Our new national action plan includes $3 billion to kick-start an overhaul of federal computer systems. It has been characterized as not only an important initiative but one that is long overdue. This week, the NHTSA made a decision to designate the computer in a self-driving car the driver. This means, in theory, that you can now build a car that has no human controls in it. The only way a human could drive such a car is through some interface with the computer. This brings up a question that we have been sidestepping a lot as we develop the self-driving car: is the human driver in a self-driving car an asset or a liability? Roll over dogs, there's a new human companion in town and it's smart, omnipresent and perhaps best of all, hair-free. The late Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said, Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do. As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become more and more advanced, can the same statement apply to computers? Telecom fraud is big business and poses a significant threat to carriers throughout the globe. According to a 2015 survey from the Communications Fraud Control Association, the telecom industry loses roughly $38.1 billion each year to fraud. And managing and mitigating fraudulent calling can be tough, particularly when regulations and responsibility are somewhat murky. This last week I was at the Intel Skylake for business launch in San Francisco, and I moderated a panel on security which pretty much convinced me to buy a bunker. For notes/script I'd taken the tablet component off of my Microsoft Surface Book, largely because it was the only Skylake based computer I had. Well, right before the event was supposed to start, one of the Intel folks walked up and said, You know, we'd really appreciate it if you didn't use that iPad on stage. At CES last week, Corning led with a glass-forward vision that was picked up by companies like Panasonic and Samsung showcasing a number of active displays placed creatively around their home focused booths. They were pretty amazing and promised a future where you could manage all aspects of your home from a central console. In all cases, however, these were overlays. In other words, they didn't rethink the design of the room, they just added a display. I'm at IBM Connect this week, and as with all IBM events since the IBM/Apple partnership, this is as much a showcase for IBM software as it is a showcase Apple's products in the workplace. Now I've been following email for decades, but this is the first time I've seen a major change in how email is handled. In fact, this really isn't email; this is something very different and, for those of us who are struggling with this new blend of email and social media, it could be a godsend. The product is called IBM Verse and you can watch a video of how this thing works here. With the big game coming up on Sunday, let's not forget what the Super Bowl is really about: commercials. Sure, some brutes in jerseys are going to concuss each other for a couple hours, but that's just an excuse to watch primo 30-second adverts for Coke, Big Daddy, and Heineken. For two firms that have had somewhat of a contentious relationship, seeing Verizon in late-stage talks to purchase XO Communications is certainly an interesting predicament. Peter Radizeski broke the story yesterday on TMCnet, and suggests the alleged deal is all about spectrum and 5G. Per Rob Powell, this rumor has been making the rounds with an unverified price tag of $1.9 billion-only time will tell what comes to fruition.
