Breathlessly, Apple fans around the globe await this coming Tuesday, Sept. 9, hoping their technology deity provides newer, better and faster products than the rest of the unwashed masses (i.e. everyone with Android products). I'm betting there will be some disappointment on that day. For those of you keeping track of the global mobile communications market, particularly if you are a U.S. policymaker and understand the impact world class mobile broadband will have on the future economic vitality of our country, then a new Deloitte analysis is going to be of intense interest. Titled United States expands global lead in mobile broadband: How policy actions could enhance or imperil America's mobile broadband competitiveness, this should be on the must read lists of the FCC and the Congress. You wouldn't think that the levels of security you put into your company, product and procedures would matter when it comes to filing for an IPO or seeking a buyout. The sordid fact, however, is that we live in an age where online vulnerabilities proliferate like mice, and the levels of security in your app correlate with your valuation as a company. For those of us of a certain age, the American humor publication Mad Magazine (it was only in print back then) was a must read. In fact, not only did its fictitious mascot Alfred E. Neuman grace the cover of numerous editions of the pub, but his poster (see below) with his most famous saying hung in many a rebellious teenager's room. Finally, and on a related matter, there could be a ripple effect that will command attention. The hackers say they were just trying to prove a point by showing how this could be done. This rings a bit hollow if as reports say there were extortion attempts to monetize the trove of celebrity images through the use of ransom via bitcoins. It raises another challenge for policy makers as to the emergence of anonymous virtual currencies in extortions of all types. Android One is Google's reference design intended to make up-to-date versions of Android easily available to smartphone users in developing regions, at prices around $100. 4Chan, as a whole, doesn't have the best of reputations online. While most of this negative reputation can be traced to the random board known as /b/-occasionally referred to as the Internet equivalent of Mos Eisley, complete with the phrase a hive of scum and villainy commonly applied-much of 4Chan is, according to reports, largely lacking in both scum and villainy. The site that birthed the Anonymous movement is also said to have given birth to a new communications tool, one that looks to outclass Skype itself, and it's called Tox. Within days after bringing in a new CEO, Sprint announced a new family plan and $60 per month unlimited plan for text, talk, and data, proudly boasting it was $20 cheaper than T-Mobile's $80 per month unlimited plan. Of course, to qualify, new and existing customers had to either purchase their phone through Sprint Easy Pay, pay full retail price or bring their own compatible device.
