Featured Articles Earlier this month, the city of San Francisco issued a cease-and-desist letter to parking spot auctioning startup Monkey Parking, alongside cohorts Sweetch and ParkModo. The apps allow users to notify other users when they plan on leaving their parking spot and auction it off to the highest bidder. Monkey Parking, however, disagrees with the city's take on the service, arguing that they are not selling off the spot itself, but rather information about the spot. OKCupid, a popular dating site, was recently caught doing similar experiments on their users as Facebook. The profiles of consumers would be intentionally altered and the compatibility of matches would be manipulated. OKCupid claims they wanted to test out their service to see how well the matches are working. B2B video marketing has been a little bit slower to the punch. However, it is gaining momentum, and plenty of professionals have reported that they've had success in using this to reach and convert their business audiences. In the closing days of 2013, not long after Halloween died down, a report emerged that Facebook was looking to buy Snapchat for the then-staggering price of $3 billion. Snapchat reportedly turned down the offer, and a new report out today suggests that might have been a good idea, as the company is in talks with Alibaba about a new round of financing that would put the company's value at more than three times what Facebook offered. We read a lot these days about the emergency of the mobile enterprise and the virtual workplace. Given the pace of industry adoption of mobility solutions, particularly mobile apps, and the virtualization of nearly Everything, the trends are undeniable. However, the questions that arise for both, and specifically for mobile, that inquiring minds want to know relate to the basics, i.e., who, what, where, why and when. I think that it is safe to say that when we think of venture companies and the money that they invest, we normally think about smaller startup technology companies as being on the receiving end. We all know from reading the drum beat of headlines that both the frequency and sophistication of data breaches unfortunately continue to increase. Confirmation of just how ugly things are comes in the latest highlights (maybe a better word would be details) contained in the release by security solutions provider SafeNet of not one but two surveys highlighting the level and nature of data breaches along with consumer attitudes about them. It seems that once again Microsoft is under examination in China. The Chinese government is investigating possible violations to its antitrust laws. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce, or SAIC as it is commonly referred to, is the authority in the People's Republic of China responsible for legislation concerning the administration of industry and commerce in China. It is the body responsible for enforcing business laws. Sprint Corp. reported operating results for the first fiscal quarter of 2014, including net income of $23 million, the best performance in almost seven years when excluding non-cash transaction-related items from 2013, and consolidated operating income of $519 million, the highest in more than seven years, Sprint said.
