Verizon posted first quarter earnings on Thursday that narrowly beat Wall Street expectations, powered mainly by stronger than anticipated contract subscriber growth and a slight uptick in overall net income. Tablet devices have emerged as the leading "second-screen" alternative to television for viewing full-length episodes, according to a new study released by Viacom. But the study might also provide more evidence that PC-based or smart phone and tablet-based "multitasking" has created an "interactive" experience once envisioned for TV-based systems. Such is the case with an article that appeared in my media outlet of preference in the morning, the New York Times. Yesterday I read with some interest the article, "Carriers Warn of Crisis in Mobile Spectrum." While a bit simplistic for those of us who were around for the start of the U.S. cellular industry it set forth in lay terms the case as to why certain members of the industry (including the father of cellular himself, Martin Cooper), believe the carriers are crying wolf. Remember FriendCaller? If you don't you are not alone. It was back in 2010 when the VoIP offering of C2Call made some news as a Skype and Jajah alternative with a difference when it received a fresh round of venture funding. The money was be used to hopefully make the capability go viral. And, while the company, founded in 2008, now claims roughly 7.4 million users, that is still a drop in the bucket. However, with an interesting announcement all of that may be about to change. Rogers Communications, Canada's dominant communications provider, has enhanced the capability of its popular Rogers One Number service with an upgrade via applications provider BroadSoft's voice applications platform BroadWorks. Leveraging the platform consumers will now be able to to use their existing mobile number for rich communications-voice, video and text services-across all of their mobile devices and computers While there was something a bit discordant about a release that started, "Want proof that the economy is improving? IPO fever has reached a new high," it happened to land in my inbox on a day when jobless claims were up, sales of existing home sales were down and the stock market was tanking.
