 | For example, here's what the pros said about the US-China trade tensions and how they will affect telecommunications companies: In answering a question about whether trade tensions would impact 5G development, a VP Corporate Strategy at a Big Four US wireless carrier wrote the following:
“Yes. [There will be a] bifurcation of application development ecosystems between China-centric and US-centric [as a result of trade tensions].” Tom Ridge, the United States' first Secretary of Homeland Security and former Governor of Pennsylvania, shared his thoughts on the trade war and how it relates to telecoms:
“Trade talks between the US and China should be separate from negotiations on Huawei and 5G. Restrictions on the Chinese telecom firm should not be used as a bargaining chip. Banning Huawei from our domestic networks does not address the threat posed by China to achieve global dominance over future telecommunications networks. While not all of our allies are ready to embrace a ban, additional action must be taken to mitigate the risks associated with a potential global telecommunications monopoly. It is critical that Huawei compete globally in a competitive, sustainable supply chain that requires equipment interoperability. The dominance of a Chinese company that is an extension of their government is a significant security threat to the critical global communications infrastructure. The world cannot afford, nor should it tolerate, such a situation. The security risks are too great and must be avoided at all costs.” | |
