At CES this past week, Lenovo made an interesting move by licensing the Alexa platform and building its own version of Amazon Echo called the "Smart Assistant." It wasn't the only one; Huawei shipped an Alexa phone and Ford announced it will eventually have cars that feature Alexa. Alexa is now one hot property thanks to Amazon's licensing strategy, which may become a problem.
A lot of this year's show is category and company evolution rather than revolution - with an exception of personal robotics shaping up to be a breakout category.
Sites like Facebook and Foursquare, connected devices like smartphones, and the Internet of Things heralded by smart refrigerators, cars and FitBits - all these take our daily habits, our opinions and our impulses, generate a picture from the data, and send it out to the ether. Every single day. Compromised privacy is the price we users pay for the convenience these services bring. But is the cost too onerous to bear?
History has shown us, since at least the 16th century, that automation ultimately creates more jobs than it kills.
With the world of advanced technology continuing to evolve, there is no doubt that the business world will continue to change over the course of 2017.
