It's Not Your Daddy's Microsoft Anymore - TechZone360

Don't blink. Microsoft is starting to pick up speed as it starts to implement drastic changes in the way it does business. Open sourcing of server software with ports to other operating systems, increasingly aggressive service bundling, support for WebRTC, and free Windows for mobile devices are evidence that cloud first and mobile first aren't just hot air. CEO Satya Nadella is shaking up Microsoft in a way that would have given Steve Ballmer a heart attack.
There will be two particularly important business opportunities unfolding next year in the electronics and high tech industry: Digital, and the Industrial Internet of Things.
Before President Obama decided to kick the hornet's nest on November 12, net neutrality was low on Washington's radar. Why is the White House pushing for broadband regulation now? How serious is the administration?
It was a strange day for Cisco, as the company both brought out its first quarter 2015 fiscal year earnings report and bid farewell to its chief financial officer (CFO) Frank Calderoni - all on the same day. Though Calderoni will be sticking around until January 1, he will be leaving on something of a high note, as Cisco reported that its earnings managed to beat Wall Street estimates for the quarter.
This year's installment could be crazier as the Consumer Electronics Association's (CEA) holiday shopping survey claims overall spending will reach the highest point - $33.76 billion - since it began tracking holiday spending in 1994. That's up 2.5 percent over 2013.
AT&T and Verizon garner the vast majority of headlines, but let's look beyond Mexico and Orwellian supercookies for a moment. CenturyLink and Frontier are doing a lot work with the resources they have-both bear watching for what they are building.
During the summer, Apple and IBM announced an exclusive partnership that teams the market leading strengths of each company in an attempt to transform enterprise mobility. This partnership addresses what the two companies call a new class of business apps, which brings IBM's big data and analytics capabilities to iPhone and iPad.
While there are plenty of users out there who don't turn to the Facebook Messenger tool, those numbers are on something of a decline, according to recent reports from Facebook itself. Recently, the company turned a milestone, with over 500 million people per month turning to Messenger to make connections easier. But this new improvement has been just a small part of a larger overall plan, and one that some might not have expected to see from a company like Facebook.
Elon Musk has confirmed SpaceX is getting into the broadband and small satellite businesses, but details remain vague. Speculation has been driven by a number of reports, the most recent a Wall Street Journal piece last week that Musk took a swipe at.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is on a roll. He recently hosted a very select group of tech writers in Redmond to better articulate the company's focus, which was followed up with a session in the U.K., and by a blog post from Microsoft Communications VP Frank Shaw.
We are approaching the season of giving, and we often open our wallets a little farther and buy a bunch of stuff for ourselves at the same time. The market is full of interesting products and some rather unique hazards this year so, as we approach Black Friday and Cyber Monday here are my thoughts on navigating this mess.
Despite what some might think, people have been known to depart the Apple line occasionally and go to other mobile devices. For a long time, this was actually something of a problem, particularly for those users who wanted to get text messages sent from one device to another. But Apple may have just delivered a great fix for those departing members, and all in the form of a simple Web-based tool.
Mitel has put some more value on the table for its ShoreTel bid. The current offer as of this morning, November 10, is $8.50 a share, representing a total value of $574 million for all outstanding shares of ShoreTel. I suspect Mitel will have to go a bit higher before there's any happiness among the ShoreTel board or shareholders.
