The U.S. Appeals Court struck down the 2011 FCC rules that all Internet traffic must be treated equally by Internet service providers. Verizon challenged the regulations since Congress did not give the FCC authority to regulate the Internet. There have been eight bill introduced in Congress between 2006 and 2012 involving net neutrality, and the only one that passed had the net neutrality provision removed from the bill. The FCC seized that power, and, as of today, the court has put the FCC in it's place. Let's start off by saying that we really very much like Cecilia Abadie. In fact we now think of her as a friend. In case you missed it, Tuesday January 14 was a big day for developers of the roughly 1 million third-party applications that use Twitter's api.twitter.com. The reason is that - in what is catch-up to Facebook and Google, who started using the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol and its successor, the TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol, for all data requests in 2011 - Twitter now requires better encryption of all communications with the Twitter API. While operators eye all of these intersecting jigsaw pieces, McCarthy hastens to add that technology decisions to drive next-gen business models will go far beyond the basics. For instance, in many architectures, there's a preprocess engine prior to content ingest that makes video more digestible. And this in turn makes a big impact on constant bitrate distribution. "There are other ways to be smart rather than just turning the crank on compression," said McCarthy. "Those are the things that are really going to make up the bulk of the strategic decisions." Just the other day we spent some time speculating on who should become Microsoft's CEO. Not entirely seriously, we explored the possibility as part of that speculation that IBMs Watson might prove to be the right choice.
