The growth of WebRTC has left plenty examining this new phenomenon and wondering how best to put it to use in their particular environment. There are certainly plenty of possibilities, but in the course of examination, many are starting to notice a growing number of similarities between Web-based real time communications (WebRTC) and session initiation protocol (SIP). That's leading those same people to ask, just what is the difference between the two technologies?
One place where we may see this is in our mobile phone video calls. WebRTC has been all about the codecs that Google contributed to the standard. The legacy of Global IP Sound and On2 Technology is embedded in the VP8 codec implementation from Google and as an open source standard and it has many advantages. However, as a software-based standard, you are forcing the processor to do more work and adding drain and heat to the battery.
This week, Daniel Pocock showed that WebRTC is not just for the phone by bringing it to one of the largest web content delivery platforms. The community that supports Drupal is full of fresh ideas in open source code that make developers lives easier and their sites more robust. Now, Daniel Pocock, building on his previous work to put convenient WebRTC solutions into the hands of the free software community, has created the DruCall WebRTC module for Drupal.
Having covered Dialogic for about two decades, I can tell you they were an integral player in the converging world of communications and technology. When you leave a voicemail, call into a call center or benefit from a telecom advancement, quite often a Dialogic product is involved by providing an interface and performing some sort of processing behind the scenes.
