NEW CHART & DATA: PAYMENTS

US card networks are going to raise interchange fees in April…

Visa and Mastercard are reportedly raising interchange fees, which are charged to merchants by card networks to accept cards, in the US this April, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. Additionally, it will become more expensive for merchants to take returns for items that were paid for using Mastercard debit cards; in some cases, merchants won't be reimbursed for the interchange fees paid during the initial transaction.

Meanwhile, Discover, the fourth-largest US card network, will reportedly be increasing certain interchange fees, including on rewards credit cards used to shop at restaurants and for online transactions on select Discover cards.

These increases will likely escalate the long-running battle between merchants and card networks over interchange fees.
  • Interchange fees are a meaningful source of revenue for card networks, but have long been a burden to merchants and can lead to higher prices for consumers. Merchants paid $64 billion in combined credit and debit interchange fees from Visa and Mastercard last year, per the Nilson Report, up 12% from 2017 and up 77% from 2012. And the anticipated increase in fees from Visa are expected to cost US merchants an additional $570 million through April 2020, according to estimates from CMPSI. Those fees can trickle down in the form of higher prices for customers, as merchants sometimes increase the prices of their goods — around 1-2.5% of prices for goods and services go to covering card fees, per The WSJ — or add surchargeswhen customers pay by cards to help compensate for the fees.
  • Card networks just reached a major settlement over interchange and raising interchange fees could lead to...

Here is what you need to know.

  1. GDP comes up just short of Trump's goal. The US economy expanded at a 2.6% clip in the fourth quarter, bringing growth for the year to 2.9% — just below the Trump administration's 3% goal. The data could still yet be revised.
  2. Tax refunds are finally trending up. After three weeks of data showing a drop in the average tax-refund size versus a year ago, numbers released Thursday by the Internal Revenue Service showed refund size this year to be outpacing that of 2018.
  3. An economic canary in the coal mine is looking bleak. South Korean exports, often looked to as a bellwether of the global economy, plunged 11.1% in February, making for their sharpest drop since April 2016.
  4. Vanishing stock-market liquidity will have an unprecedented impact on investing over the next 10 years. Analysts at Bernstein explain the five main drivers of evaporating liquidity and what investors can do to get out ahead of the shift.
  5. Elon Musk warns Tesla won't be profitable in the first quarter. "We do not expect to be profitable in Q1, but profitability in Q2 is likely," Musk said Thursday.
  6. Gap is spinning off Old Navy. Gap shares soared 20% late Thursday after the struggling retailer said it was making its Old Navy brand a standalone company.
  7. Martha Stewart is going into cannabis. Stewart, and the Canadian cannabis producer Canopy Growth Corporation, are teaming up to develop a new line of product offerings for CBD and other cannabinoid uses for both humans and animals.
  8. Stock markets around the world were gaining ground. China's Shanghai Composite (+1.8%) paced the gains in Asia, and Germany's DAX (+0.98%) was leading the charge in Europe. The S&P 500 was set to open up 0.59% near 2,801.
  9. Earnings reporting slows down. Foot Locker reports ahead of the opening bell.
  10. US economic data keeps coming. Personal income and spending will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET before Markit manufacturing PMI crosses the wires at 9:45 a.m. ET. Then, at 10 a.m. ET., ISM manufacturing and University of Michigan consumer confidence are due out. US auto sales will be announced throughout the day. The US 10-year yield was up 1.3 basis points at 2.73%.

Good morning! This is the tech news you need to know this Friday.

  1. Facebook, Google, and other major tech firms face multi-billion dollar fines in the UK if they don't clean up harmful content on their platforms. The UK's digital minister, Margot James, suggested a new tech regulator could administer fines of up to 4% of companies' global revenue.
  2. Facebook is building a digital payments system for WhatsApp which would let users send and receive cash without having to pay fees. It is reported to be a "stablecoin" — meaning the value of the coin is pegged to the value of a traditional currency.
  3. Tesla is eliminating most of its stores and going to an online-only sales model. It's not clear how Tesla will achieve this e-tailing objective in the face of the resistance it has traditionally faced from franchised auto dealers in various US states.
  4. Tesla is finally releasing the long-awaited $35,000 Model 3. US customers will reportedly be able to order the $35,000 model starting on Thursday and will receive the vehicles as soon as March.
  5. Huawei said it designed a folding phone similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold — but killed it because it was so bad. The CEO of Huawei's consumer business, Richard Yu, told Business Insider that he personally had killed off the floated design.
  6. Andrew Cuomo and other Democrats are begging Jeff Bezos to reconsider New York for HQ2 after Amazon abruptly announced plans to ditch the city. Cuomo has reportedly been speaking to Amazon execs, including CEO Jeff Bezos, to try and get the company to change course.
  7. Apple's cofounder is worried the iPhone maker has fallen behind on folding phones. Steve Wozniak said he's worried that Apple isn't a leader in the newly minted folding phone market.
  8. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the car company won't be profitable by the first three months of next year, sending the stock down. He did add that the firm would be profitable by the second quarter.
  9. The chief financial officer of UK banking startup Revolut has resigned after reports of poor employee treatment and compliance problems. The Telegraph reported that Peter O'Higgins resigned this week.
  10. Lyft and Uber will both offer some of their drivers cash to bonuses to buy stock in their upcoming IPOs. Both companies will offer programs that give their most active and dedicated drivers cash bonuses which can be used to buy company stock at the listing price.
